Refrigerator Reviews Buying Guide

PRICE

The average new refrigerator for 2014 has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of about $1,800.

You’ll find them listed (pre-sale) anywhere from $450 for a basic model with wire shelves and no icemaker, to a $10,000 model that’s built-in stainless with lots of bells and whistles.

The best values are usually found in the $1,000 - $2,500 range.

If you’re looking at different sizes it’s important to compare the cost per cubic foot of capacity. For 2014 the average is about $75 per ft3, but can range anywhere from $25 to $400.

Note that you can often find refrigerators on sale at 10%-15% below the MSRP price.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Most new refrigerators (about 90%) are ENERGY STAR qualified, so just looking for the ENERGY STAR label is not sufficient.

The average new refrigerator uses about 500 kWh of electricity annually. The worst uses more than 700 kWh, and the best is down around 340 kWh.

To save money and the environment, try to select a refrigerator that uses less than 600 kWh annually, and if possible, less than 500 kWh.

FEATURES

Dual evaporators are not very common, but they allow different humidity levels to be maintained in the freezer and fresh food sections.

Glass shelves tend to contain spills and are sturdier than wire shelving.

Almost all new refrigerators have auto-defrost nowadays.

Gallon door bins are very handy for accessing heavy jugs that are frequently used.

Door alarms with audible alerts are indispensible if you have younger children that don’t always fully close the door.

Temperature controlled drawers allow you to keep meats and beverages at a colder temperature than the rest of the fresh food section.

Humidity controlled crispers provide flexibility in maintaining freshness in vegetables versus fruits.

WARRANTIES

Nearly all refrigerator manufactures offer just a one year warranty on the entire appliance.

The primary warranty discriminator is on the sealed refrigerant system (SRS) which normally includes an expensive component known as the compressor.

Look for a warranty that offers 5-10 years on SRS parts and 5 years SRS labor.

Refrigerator Reviews by Type

Not sure what type of refrigerator you're looking for? Here's an overview of the four main designs:

Side by Side Refrigerator Side by Side Refrigerator Ratings
Fresh food and freezer space is split vertically with two tall compartments. Shelf space is narrower, but you can store your favorite fresh and frozen food items at higher levels for more convenient access. If you don't need extra-wide shelves, and you use fresh and frozen foods about the same amount of time, this type refrigerator is ideal.
Top Freezer Refrigerator Top Freezer Refrigerator Reviews
Common style that's been popular for years. The freezer section takes up the top third or so of the space, with the larger fresh food section on the bottom. Provides wide storage spaces and racks for cakes and pizzas, but it's sometimes difficult for shorter adults or children to reach items in the back of the freezer. One of the most affordable refrigerator designs.
Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Ratings
Just the opposite of the top freezer, with your fresh food space on top and the freezer on the bottom. The freezer section can be opened with a door, but pull-out drawers are becoming more common. Many families use their fresh food section the most, so having all of your fresh food on top minimizes the amount of time you have to bend over to reach items.
French Door Refrigerator French Door Refrigerator Reviews
This stylish refrigerator has one large fresh food section on top with two pull-out doors, similar to armoire style furniture. The freezer section can either have one or two pull-out drawers on the bottom. If you're energy conscious, this refrigerator can save electricity because you only have to open one of the armoire doors to grab something.
